“There is nothing greener than a garbage disposal unit in modern plumbing. At SOLIDEA Group we are asking our real estate development clients not to forget them in their projects” says SOLIDEA’s Steve Walker. “The good old fashioned waste disposal unit is really making a come back in WE [Waste Etiquette] and developments which promote such innovation are cutting edge despite old hat technology”.

Foodwaste or organic waste accounts for 15-20% of all household garbage in Europe and the Middle East, garbage sorting and recycling at home increases the biological quantity and the potential for Methane. That’s really bad news because it is this content that causes Methane in the landfill site and its dirty garbage that makes the garbage sorting business the mess that is today.

Methane is far more damaging to the environment than CO2 and any means to reduce Methane can only be good practice. Methane occurs in garbage because it is dirty and because old cartons and non compacted garbage trap methane in landfill sites. Several generations of education ensure even the youngest of Swedes are WE trained and the environment is all the better for it.

As WE advances, finally the under sink processing unit or “Waste Disposal Unit” is making a come back. The cost of this highly fashionable kitchen gadget is around 50 Euros per unit, simply not having them in new homes is not green practice and it scores very low WE points with SOLIDEA. Responsible real estate developers should realize that the Waste Disposal Unit is very much part of being green and even if WE does not get a chapter with mainstream LEED and BREEAM organizations smart developers are promoting smart WE.

There are several Swedish technologies for extracting biogas from collected bio-solids in water, these technologies have grown up integrated with Waste Disposal Unit culture. SOLIDEA however have a technology to extract solid biomatter from water that use kitchen and human waste as feedstock for its PowerCan® 200 systems. SOLIDEA Group are developing solutions with 200kWe size gasification units for many different real estate applications.

“We already demonstrated that CHP like PowerCan® 200 system can convert this waste into profitable energy the cost savings and the energy it generates combined can have less than 5 years payback its only a matter of time before processing this waste is mandatory making provision for it now makes good sense” says Walker.

Using water transported biological waste is nothing new the first waste disposal units were patented in 1927 by John W. Hammes, a Racine, Wisconsin, architect, who developed the first garbage disposal in his basement because he wanted to make kitchen cleanup work easier for his wife.

Nicknamed the “electric pig” [ the disposal unit not the wife] when first introduced by the Emerson Electric Company, the appliance operates on the principle of centrifugal force to pulverize food waste against a stationary grind ring so it would easily flush down the drain.

Meanwhile at the other end of the plumbing SOLIDEA Group PowerCan® 200 waste water treatment uses a similar even more old fashioned settling tank to remove all the water from the solids, the kitchen sink material can be combined in the sewerage system with human waste which has a similar energy conversion potential and water content of around 70% biosolids

PowerCan® 200 process is not only low cost and quickly income producing but is delivered modular and in the size of a shipping container. According to the size of the operation the developer simply increases the number of containers. There are various junctions in the overall disposal system where PowerCan® 200 can be deployed, it can for example be combined with other chambers such as WtE to produce integrated energy plants that make all kinds of non recyclable waste extinct and ensuring zero feedstock for the landfill from any size development.

The PowerCan® 200 application removes the biological solid waste sending the water content onward in an inline process the PowerCan® 200 then makes all biowaste extinct by turning biological solid waste into feedstock which is converted through gasification into Syngas PowerCan® 200 converts this fuel in a CHP unit creating electricity and hot water. Syngas CHP engines are converted Diesel engines with very low emissions gasification is made in a vacuum the container the PowerCan® 200 operates from can easily be buried the system is least of all obtrusive and very kind to the environment.

The residual ash from PowerCan® 200 has a high value it is a readily salable commodity for organic farming and as an organic fertilizer nothing is wasted in this process and with no cost to the environment.

Several legislators in the world are looking to make the undersink garbage disposal unit a requirement it is without doubt part of the WE education process which makes countries like Sweden world leaders in caring for the planet we live on.
