Syria’s chemical weapons program which were first developed in the 1970’s finally took a turn in the right direction this month with agreement to eliminate more than 1000 tons of chemical weapons in Syria by mid 2014. But what will happen to these weapons? How will Syria’s weapons of mass destruction be safely and securely removed from Syria to facilities where they can be made extinct and with little impact to the environment?

Syrias Chemical Weapons
WMD’s or WoMD’s [Weapons of Mass Destruction] are biological or nuclear weapons which are consistent in their ability to kill many humans at one exchange, whilst simultaneously creating significant damage to the environment. According to French Intelligence more than 1000 tons of chemical WMD’s are stored inside Syria. Not all of these weapons are under control of the Syrian Government as the territories and facilities fall into the hands of different factions. Recently these weapons were used inside Syria against civilian targets.
The 330mm surface to surface “Sarin Gas” rockets most recently deployed against civilians outside of Damascus, Zamalks and elsewhere are just a small part of a huge inventory of Weapons of Mass Destruction which is manufactured and held unaccounted for in this part of the Middle East.
Many of the combat weapons developed by Syria since the 1970’s carry Mustard Gas or more significantly Sarin Gas and VX nerve gas. Whilst Mustard Gas which was developed for trench warfare can be lethal, Sarin Gas is lethal and 20 times more deadly than cyanide, it has been stockpiled during decades of development. Tactics devised by the Syrian Military against its neigbours were developed with VX, a nerve agent to be deployed by the Syrian Military in a “binary manner” [the two agents were designed to be mixed at the last minute on the battle field to have a maximum combined effect in acts of war].
Sarin and VX together pose a significant threat to humanity and with maximun impact on the environment. Sarin Gas or VX is typically packed into a thin walled gas cannister connected to a detonation device as a payload on a rocket. The rocket then explodes on impact the chemical payload is dispersed, the most significant impact being the poisonous gas which can kill or disable many hundreds of people in a single discharge rather than the explosive device which detonates the gas.
Getting rid of or making Sarin Gas weapons extinct is no easy feat, the quality and condition of the caches is unknown and in any event unreliable. Whereas Sarin weapons manufacturing equipment can be easily stripped down or broken with hammers. On the other hand Sarin weapons require special handling and controlled disposal, they pose a significant risk to mankind and the environment when transported or when they are in a cache of significant size.
The storage and handling of Sarin weapons requires very special conditions so that they may remain safe when stored in large quantity, after manufacture they are often dispersed to reduce the risk of accident, collecting large caches of these weaspons is very dangerous. Disposal of Sarin weapons is also a long and laborious task where each weapon is discharged one after another in specially developed discharge and gas cleaning chambers, it has taken more than three decades to have any impact on reducing caches of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Many more caches are still dumped at sea, they require urgent attention of the local or international authorities as they already pose a significant risk to marine life, the future risk to humanity and the environment increases as their status underwater or underground deteriorates.
The Extinction of Weapons of Mass Destruction
The destruction of weapons of mass destruction is a perilously slow process, the development of technologies to rid the world of these weapons has been slow in development. The US military for example which used Pacific Atolls to test nuclear weapons also used these theatres to destroy many of the chemical weapons developed before and after WWII with little effect on the caches but with a substantial lasting effect on the environment.
European military have abandoned the use of underground facilities used for the destruction of more conventional weapons. The detonation of traditional weapons underground like recent underground gasification experiments was concluded with significant and lasting damage and cost to the environment. As the stockpiles of Weapons of Mass Destruction have increased and in the light of the legacy of risk or a greater threat to humanity in decades to come, temporary solutions such a dumping weapons at sea have actually subisded in favor or real research and development, to find safer and more permantent solutions to Chemical Weapons of Mass Destruction.
“The environment is at greater risk from weaspons dumping than ever before and many governments are now faced with huge costs to recover and dispose of their own weapons caches in temporary sites such as offshore or redundant landfill”.
The environmental risk from now ancient Chemical Weapons is significant and as an indication of the “inventory of progress” made so far; many weapons from WWI are still being made extinct. It will take many years to complete the destruction of the unstable weapons caches of the previous Centrury and to have any impact on those from WWII or Vietnam will take decades of dedicated programs. Before society can move forward to the next chapter of our history to even larger stockpiles and with even greater potential calamity more investment is needed to develop the extinction industry.
As Sarin Gas and Chemical Warfare experts confirm Sarin presents extra ordinary risk to mankind. The extinction of Sarin is of particlular priority as it was demonstrated in Syria “Sarin is relatively easy to deploy” However thereis an opportunity to develop several already dedicated sites around the world and increase their numnbers with production lines to make current caches extinct in preference to them being “securly” stored by another military and a bigger problem for the next generation.
Weapon Destruction Technology
The United States Military and similar engage one of four technologies, three are commerically developed technologies the fourth was developed by the United States Military. Weapons such as Mustard Gas, Sarin Gas or VX containers are fed into a tight chamber, each weapon is detonated one at a time and the off gas which creates the chemical threat is fed through a flue where the gas reform can take place.
Of the three established technologies T-60, SDC 2000 and the DAVINCH, it is the DAVINCH technology which desmonstrates the most sustainable with the least negative environmental impact. DAVINCH technology has more than ten years active service, the DAVINCH has already had a significant impact on WWI and other caches. Gas reforming equipment located in the gas flue is the “Glidarc” it is a Polish invention and featured as one of the seven technologies incorporated in SOLIDEA’s PowerCan® 200. Glidarc is referred to as Technology 3 by the PowerCan® 200 Development team which is in R&D phase for mass production in Poland and for many different devices in future.
PowerCan® 200 Technology 3
PowerCan® 200 is a small scale gasification CHP system to be deployed upstream of waste sources as an energy production devices. PowerCan® 200 is combining seven state of the art technologies in an old proven technology. A reactor creates a producer gas from carbacious feedstocks such as biomass, food or celluslose waste. Gas from coal or other hydrocarbons such as flare gas can also be used as a dirty producer gas for reform. PowerCan® 200 producer gas is created in a slight vacuum, so no emissions outside of the process can occur. Dirty producer gas is fed through PowerCan® 200 Technology 3 “The Glidarc” with very safe emissons exactly the same technology as in the DAVINCH process.
“The “Glidarc” is unique in a CHP unit it converts far more producer gas into pure synthesis gas which produces “more fuel from less feedstock” the reform process as demonstrated in Kobe is totally safe for the operator and for the environment”.
The Glidarc was first invented in the 1980’s by Poland’s most eminnant scientist the famous Professor Albin Czarnichowski. Professor Albin nicknamed the “Father of Low Energy Plasma Devices” also developed Glidarc applications to make the WWI “Ypres” cache of chemical weapons extinct.
Glidarc is developed in the gas flue especially for modular energy devices, it breaks all gases down, [even easily handling those in Weapons of Mass destruction] to produce the basic building blocks Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide an ideal mix for ultra low emission CHP energy devices.
Future Processing Weapons of Mass Destruction
Of the three established technologies for extinction of chemical weapons the DAVINCH at Kobe Steel in Japan deonstrates the most sustainable, and like other devices which feature Glidarc it can be mass produced creating clean emissions which can be spent in engines where their particulartes can be spent or removed to have even lower impact. Glidarc reforms gases so they are simply safe enough to release into the atmosphere with almost no impact or threat to the environment.
The DAVINCH equipment at Kobe Steel in Japan has at least another decade of caches to make extinct under current contracts. DAVINCH with Glidarc technology is being further developed as a modular solution which can be transported to caches of chemical weapons [in the same way as PowerCan® 200 is being developed]. A modular solution reduces environmental risks associated with transport and security of moving or relocating large caches of chemical weapons elsewhere.
Technology 3 Glidarc has significant future prospects as more chemical weapons from the various wars since WWI have to recovered and made extinct. Glidarc is set to make significant impact on the renewable and hydrocarbon energy indsutry in the coming years. Unfortunately the ongoing development and production of Weapons of Mass Destruction and seemingly endless caches of weapons will continue to keep devices like the DAVINCH busy for many generations to come.
